A Thief or a Messenger?

When death finally stares you in the face, will you see it as a thief or a messenger?

The singing monks of Norcia, minions of the Whore of Babylon and the Antichrist according to so many "Prayer Book Anglicans" = Presbyterians with prayer books.

Whose Christianity is authentic, that of the Benedictine monks shown here or the modern radical descendents of J. Gresham Machen?

Not that you quite said he was, but I must protest any implication that J. Gresham Machen belongs in the same category as these men. He was wrong about some things to be sure, but he was a great Christian and a great fighter for Christ. He was certainly the last person to write deranged and obsessive nonsense about anybody.

I don't disagree about the clear difference between J. Gresham Machen and Donald Philip Veitch. Unfortunately, the great Machen played a key role in what would become an ugly and anti-Catholic American fundamentalism, and his Presbyterian fellows played a large part in that, enabling the likes of Veith. Their successors live today, though thankfully on the margins.

The Christian theologian and apologist Edward John Carnell once described what happened in terms of a fundamentalism which was initially a valid "movement" that unfortunately quickly morphed into a pathological "mentality."

Well, perhaps, although Machen never was a fundamentalist and never made peace with the fundamentalists (which is why Carl McIntire couldn't live with Machen's followers). He deplored their anti-intellectual and anti-historical tendencies. I suppose he perhaps played a key role in their success, but then, I suppose that in various ways some popes did too.

Anyway, not to quibble. Our brother Veitch clearly has some serious hangups. I pray that God brings him peace and a love of unity.
